Who we are:

Join Embark on our mission to improve the life and longevity of dogs everywhere. Our canine DNA test — the highest-rated, most accurate on the market — enables us to make scientific advances in personalized pet care. Recently named one of the fastest-growing private companies in America by Inc. Magazine, Embark is the only canine genetics company using research-grade technology, which allows us to make new scientific discoveries.

Designed by world leaders in dog genetics in partnership with Cornell University, the Embark Dog DNA Test provides information on genetic health risks and breed make-up, allowing dog owners, breeders, and veterinarians to make personalized care plans based on a dog's unique genetic profile. Embark is also home to the world’s only canine DNA relative finder. No wonder The New York Times recently called Embark’s Breed and Health Kit the best dog DNA test available!

Interested in joining our pack? We are looking for highly motivated and mission-driven employees who will join us as Embark leads the cutting edge of creativity and innovation in the fast-growing consumer genetics space.

About the role:

Across the Science and Data Platforms teams, you will work to develop and improve the components of our bioinformatics pipeline. Our bioinformatics pipeline is at the center of Embark’s core product offering and is built to help customers better understand and care for their dogs. This pipeline transforms raw genetic data into a dog’s breed mix and ancestry, doggy relatives, health conditions and traits, and more! The components of the pipeline must run efficiently, reliably, and at a massive scale on AWS. You will work closely with Scientists, Engineers, and Product Managers to solve important scientific problems and develop the next generation of Embark products!

What you’ll do:

  • Develop high-quality code and technical solutions that are clean, performant, and well-tested
  • Help optimize our ability to deliver performant software in a complex scientific space ripe for improvement
  • Be a critical contributor on a team developing what is a core differentiator in the Embark product offering
  • Improve best practices and code quality via mentoring and architecture, design, and code review
  • Participate in agile software development, ensuring you are always positioned to do the most high-impact work

What experience we’re looking for:

  • B.S. in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
  • 5+ years of professional software development experience
  • 2+ years of Python development experience
  • Expertise in designing, building, testing, maintaining, and operating large-scale distributed systems
  • Professional experience providing code and design reviews
  • Experience with cloud computing technologies from a major provider (AWS, GCP, Azure)
  • Experience with relational (Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server) and/or non-relational databases (DynamoDB, HBase, Bigtable, DocumentDB)
  • Experience with software/system profiling and optimization
  • Experience implementing testing best practices
  • Understanding of and experience with Agile development practices
  • Ability to independently own software development projects
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Experience that is Nice to Have (but not required):

  • Experience with Python code profiling and optimization
  • Experience with containers (eg Docker) and/or Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC)
  • Experience with systems in genetics/bioinformatics or a related field
